A year ago, I wrote a tip about how the Kogi Korean BBQ truck had opened up in LAX's Terminal 4. Sadly, it only lasted 6 months because LAX decided to rotate their food trucks. That was a huge mistake for both LAX and American Airlines passengers. The two replacements they've had since were never busy – even at lunch time, while the Kogi truck always had a line no matter what time of day.
Kogi tacos are so good that my wife (@NatalieDiScala) started flying American Airlines instead of her previous go-to carrier Air Canada, just so that she could fly in and out of T4 and stop at Kogi. That should tell you something!
If you aren't familiar with Kogi, here's the scoop on what's become one of Los Angeles' hottest food trends. Kogi's founder, Roy Choi, is arguably the person who is single-handedly responsible for the worldwide food truck movement. When he began selling his $2 tacos on L.A. streets from a truck in November of 2008, he quickly had lines that were two hours long.
And if waiting in a long line wasn't bad enough, if you actually wanted to eat one of his tasty tacos, you had to log on to their website or follow them on Twitter to find out where the truck was heading that day. Since then, he's expanded to multiple trucks and bricks and mortar places.
Fortunately, for those living in the South Bay in Los Angeles or travelers on a long layover through LAX (here are my tips for outside of the airport and for inside the airport), there's another go-to place instead of In-N-Out burger (still one of my favorites for both the food and the plane spotting).
Kogi just opened up a café inside the Whole Foods in El Segundo. It's just 3 miles away from LAX and a straight shot heading south on Sepulveda. It's located within the prepared foods section and Kogi offers a full menu of their famed tacos (get the short rib tacos for $3.25 each), burritos ($8.50), Blackjack Quesadillas ($10), Korean Spiced Fries ($7.50), Blue Moon Moon Mulitas ($5) and more (see menu above).
My wife and I happened to be there a few days before they opened and Chef Roy was there, giving out free food. Shockingly there was no line so we tried a few different dishes and they were all delish. Since they opened on November 8, we've been five times and have never waited more than 10 minutes. Now it's your turn!
