A year and a half ago, we ran a reader travel tip that helped us figure out if the power went out while we were away and if our frozen food is safe to eat. Well, I just found an even better tip thanks to Sheila Pulanco Russell via housebeautiful.com.
Sheila's tip is to freeze a mug of water, then place a quarter on top of the ice and return the cup to the freezer. Then, you leave for your trip. When you return, "If the quarter has fallen to the bottom of the cup that means all the food defrosted and you should throw it out. But if the quarter is either on the top or in the middle of the cup then your food may still be ok."
